Useful Tips:
1. Traffic-offences have become very expensive in Spain and are being punished ever harder! Many times, these are punished with higher fines than in many other European countries. Example: If you overtake in a no-overtaking zone the fine is 750€, and for not wearing seatbelts it is 80€. Driving under the influence of alcohol is also punished very severely!
2. The meaning of the painted curbs can save much money:
white: parking allowed
blue: parking fee, in Almunecar in the winter-months toll-free,
yellow: NO PARKING, your car could be towed away, and it is expensive to retrieve it.
Be aware that the No Parking signs can be hidden by a parked car!
3. You could have problems, as in other EU or Non-EU-Countries, if you have no green insurance-cover-card with yourself!
4. The car-insurances in Spain often only are liable for part of the costs, if your car is very expensive it may be advisable to obtain a Special-Holiday-Insurance.
5. Furthermore, it is advisable to get overseas health insurance, or an E111. A vacation-health insurance, that can be inexpensive, is advisable in every foreign country! Any high performance sport can also be covered, Eg: paragliding/diving?
6. Don't forget the certificates for your high-performance-sport (paragliding/diving) if necessary!
7. Provided you are driving here, you should ensure you have sufficient refreshments. You should ensure that you take rests, and remember that there can be many traffic jams, especially at busy times, at the weekend or in the Siesta-Time. The temperature can get very high, in some areas higher than 40 degrees. Do you have also a foreign driving permission? Both The AA and The RAC can provide these. 8. You cannot tow another car at any time in Spain!
9. Never leave expensive objects in you car!
10. With rental cars, you should ask about the Insurance (and how much you must pay!). Keep an eye on it, and make sure that you get a copy from of the lease, and you must have all documents pertaining to the car in it.
11. Each car MUST have 2 Warning Triangles and TWO spare sets of all lights.
12. The maximum speed on highways is 120 km/h, but in tunnels it is 80 km/h, on country roads 100 km/h, and in cities 50 km/h, but frequently reduced to 30 km/h however. You must take special caution of pedestrians and motorcyclists!
